5 ways freelancers can self-promote online…
Here’s how you can self-promote online & why you should.
When I started freelancing a few years ago, I had no idea how I would find jobs. All I knew is I had a friend who was a freelance writer, and it seemed like something I wanted to do.
Fast forward to now, and I’ve found that there are countless ways to promote myself online to find more than enough work. Since so many people have gone remote these last couple of years, there are even more opportunities to connect online and find freelance jobs.
This is why you should certainly use the internet as a way to find work. Not to mention, networking online allows you so much more flexibility in when and where you work.
Although there are many ways you self-promote as a freelancer, that doesn’t mean it’s easy. After you figure out what you want to do as a freelancer and what your niche is, you need to figure out where your ideal client is.
As a lifestyle freelance writer, I connect with most of my ideal clients through my website, Instagram, Facebook, and referrals. I also sprinkle in other methods whenever I’m looking for more work.
No matter what your freelance job is, here are the 5 best ways to self-promote online:
1. Use social media
Social media will be your best friend as a freelancer. This is because most people and businesses are using it. Twitter has become an excellent place to self-promote as a freelancer. Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are also useful in growing an audience.
I also love networking on Facebook groups for freelancers, and the easiest way to connect with people here is by responding to posts and answering questions.
Linkedin is also a social media platform great for self-promoting, especially if you’re a writer, graphic designer, or a coach.
2. Set up a website
What better way to self-promote than by utilising a space that's entirely yours to showcase your expertise? You can use your website to talk about what problems you can solve for your audience, display testimonials, and incorporate a blog to boost your website traffic.
3. Start a blog
Another of my favourite self-promoting techniques is starting a blog in your expertise. This is the perfect way to show your ideal client how much you actually know about your field.
4. Start a YouTube channel
YouTube SEO (search engine optimization) is a great way to build an audience and grow your freelance business.
Similar to a blog, a YouTube channel allows you to talk about your expertise to show your ideal clients how knowledgeable you are.
5. Use online forums.
Answering questions in online forums is often overlooked when marketing a freelance business, but it’s one well worth trying out.
Answering questions in online forums allows you to share valuable information, build trust, and show your expertise.
Popular forums include Reddit and Quora for just about any topic and Stack Overflow for discussions about programming.
Remember, self-promotion is key to becoming a successful freelancer. I hope you found these suggestions helpful, as they’ve helped me tremendously in growing my freelance business!
Nomad Favourites
Check out our favourite books, podcasts, and products just for nomads.
Journo Resources Membership
Journo Resources is a website for freelancers and free weekly newsletter of work opportunities, both remote and freelance.
I have been subscribed for a while and found some great opportunities thanks to them.
They recently launched a new membership system with a 30-day free trial. The bottom tier provides access to their whole content library of videos for freelancers which I am slowly working my way through as a new member.
It also includes a pass to all of the upcoming sessions and more perks.
Courier Magazine
Another recent discovery, Courier is a website, newsletter, podcast, and magazine about creative-minded business and getting stuff done.
There is a lot of helpful information on their website, and the newsletter is invaluable. I treated myself to a digital subscription after trying one of the magazines and finding it genuinely inspiring!
Nord VPN
Honestly, it took me much longer to consider getting a VPN than it should have considering how often I work using public WIFI.
I have tried a few over the years as I lived in China for a while and needed one to bypass the firewall, so rest assured the VPNs I have recommended in this list have been tested rigoursly.
They also pass the streaming srvice approval because sometimes I simply need to access British television when I am abroad, hello Eurovision! Nord VPN has ended up being my personal favourite.
